Brewer Hill: The People's Cemetery of Annapolis, Maryland

This FREE lecture focuses on Brewer Hill Cemetery, one of the oldest historically known African- American cemeteries still being used predominantly by the African - American community for interments. Situated in the heart of Annapolis, the history of the property can be traced back to the late 17th and early 18th centuries. Part of the property was once used as part of a Revolutionary War hospital.

The People's Cemetery of Brewer Hill was named for Anne Arundel County Orphans Court Judge Nicholas Brewer II, who used the property to bury his slaves and allowed his local colleagues and prominent friends to bury their slaves and their hired help there as well.

Learn details about the more than 7,000 occupants interred in the cemetery at this free public event.
