Dick Knowles will share several stories of discovery and research, starting with “The Dash”. This is the punctuation between birth and death dates on so many cemetery memorial stones. It’s the unwritten story of the person memorialized. We’ll look at cemeteries of interest to our Merrimack Valley members, begin with some gravestones, and follow up with research to tell stories hidden in the dash.

 

Let The Stones Speak is the name of Kathy and Dick Knowles’ business, mainly about cemetery memorials. They are members of the Association for Gravestone Studies, Maine Old Cemetery Association, MSOG (of course!), and other cemetery and genealogy groups. They have lectured on different cemeteries, cleaning, ghost stories, and the dash. They have done cemetery inspection and referral for cleaning and updating cemeteries and memorial stones. They are trained in many aspects of gravestone cleaning and repair. Dick is also one of the co-editors of the book The Cemeteries of Middlesex County published by the Middlesex Chapter of MSOG.
