O Say Can You See: Early Washington, D.C., Law and Family

The site allows you to explore kinship and family networks of multigenerational black, white, and mixed families of early Washington, D.C. (portions of which originally were part of Maryland). These networks have been created using information derived from court records, as well as genealogical research. Because of the importance of kinship and family in matters of freedom, the petition for freedom case files in particular often contain genealogical information for the black and white families involved in these suits.

Old Hoopers Island Graveyard at Honga, Dorchester County

Hoopers Island is one of the oldest settled areas in America. The Graveyard was originally part of the 117 acre tract called "Shapleigh's Chance." The tract, surveyed in 1667, was sold in 1669 to William Travers of Hoopers Island. With the passage of generations, the lands were re-surveyed and subdivided. In 1821 John Parker, William Travers' great-grandson, sold the graveyard to Matthew Travers and the heirs of Travers Tolley. Matthew Travers' first wife, Mary, was buried here in 1805 (the oldest tombstone).
